DNS - Doman Name Service - It is a "service" that helps to translate between user readable names and IP addresses. Given a name such as "yahoo.com", it can translate it to an IP address and given an IP address it can translate it to say "yahoo.com".

Active Directory is a windows "service" that uses the DNS. There are many components of Acitive Directory and DNS is one of them. Others include, user management, computer management, group policy managment, cluster management etc.

You would need access to a DNS before you install Acitive directory as it uses it extensively. For best performances of Active Directory, it is best to have a DNS server running in the same network as the Active Directory Doman Controller.
