The two small comps with a red X is actually a good sign for you! That means that the networkin card is setup correctly, but only that it is not connected to any network.

I have assumed the most common situation, that you are connecting your computer to the local network / internet gateway using ethernet cable. However if you are connected differently - Wireless or USB, the settings are different. I recommend that you provide full details of your network, -- what your computer is connected to? Is it wired or wireless? Preferably the model details of Router / Access Point / DSL Modem etc. and a suitable solution can be provided.

Follow these steps -

1. Check the Networking Cable, is it connected at all / is it plugged in fully or securely? If not fix it.

2. How about the other end of the cable, has it been plugged into a router / other comp? If not fix it.

3. Has the router / other comp turned on? If not turn it on, and wait a few minutes for address resoultion.

4. If all these hardware conditions are okay, and still you are not able to connect, perhaps the TCP/IP settings are wrong. To fix it ;

a. Right click on the two small computers with red cross, and select (and left click) 'Open Network Connections'. Here you will find a list of all the network adapters your computer has.

b. Select the ethernet adapter (usually listed as Local Area Connection). Right click on it, and go to Properties.

c. In the general tab, in the central box (under 'This connection uses the following items:'), you will find a list of various services & protocols. Almost at the bottom of the list you should find 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)'

d. Select it, and click on the button 'Properties' just outside the list sub-window. A new window will open up called 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties'

e. Check the boxes 'Obtain the IP address automatically' and 'Obtain the DNS server address automatically'. Click OK, and close all the boxes/ windows opened up.

You should be connected to the network! It could take a minute or two.

If your configuration is different feel free to contact me with the details of your computer, network, router/ modem / gateway / access point etc.

Hope this helps

Did you check the network cable? Is DHCP enabled on the router? If not, is the IP address set properly on the NIC?
