The short answer is yes. AT&T's answer would be, only with a static address. However, this is not necessarily a requirement. There are some "free" domain name services out there. Don't forget to put your web server in your DMZ (if you are using a gateway router). The DMZ is the key point in making your web server to be accessed from the web. Next would be to determine the IP address to distribute.

The presumption is that you are using basic residential service, and that you don't want to "pay" for a domain name, more then you don't want one.

It is certainly possible to do what you ask. A domain name is, in fact, just a pointer to an IP address, anyway. That's what DNS (Domain Name Service) does. If you check your Network TCP/IP properties, you'll see an entry for DNS (auto or manual). Usually your ISP provides this to you.

Most people can't remember IP addresses (which are themselves decimal representations of binary numbers), which is why domain names are used instead. Thus, if you run a traceroute to www.yahoo.com, for example, you'll see an IP address in the result (209.191.93.52, from where I tried it).

So, if you want to run a web server on your IP address, go right ahead. But you might want to make sure your ISP (a) doesn't restrict your doing so, and (b) you have a permanent IP address (which usually costs more), or you'll find yourself getting 404'd all of a sudden!

Your website will not look professional.

1- The cheapest way:

Buy your domain name from GP: http://www.goldpuma.com for $10.

Get your purchased domain by a free web hosting service hosted.

2- Create a professional website for only $58. Domain + Full-featured web hosting

Hope this helped.

yeah... just don't buy a domain name.... So long as you have a static IP address.
