Question:
How do I repair DNS and Key Ports issues?

Hello,

This question is a little complicated, so whoever gives an answer THAT WORKS will get 5 stars.

Well, before I get to the point, I think I'll tell you guys a little background information. This is important. Please read. :)

Recently I got a blue screen error on my computer. It moved so fast that I could not read it thoroughly, but it was a crash dump. This happened over and over. I would get the error, the laptop would restart itself, go back onto the main screen JUST before the sign in screen on my User Account, freeze, get the error again, and repeat this endless cycle until I booted it into safe mode. (In safe mode, I decided to uninstall Net Nanny, which I put on my computer for my child. Recently a file in it went corrupt, and I intended to uninstall it in the first place, but never got around to it. I still do not know if this is the source of the problem.) Another thing, when I tried booting it into "Safe Mode with Networking" this gave me the same error as when I tried getting on originally.

The Net Nanny thing didn't seem to solve it. I kept getting the error, so I finally said "Hell with it." and did a system restore to a couple days back. I rebooted my computer afterward, and I could sign into my user account once again.

But, it wasn't over apparently.

Now when I try to connect to the internet I can't. I cannot use any of my browsers (IE, Chrome, FireFox, Safari), my daughter cannot sign into MSN, she can't play Onverse, etc.

(She has a Windows 7, VAIO laptop, 64 bit by the way.)

When I troubleshoot it, I get a DNS error saying,
"Your DNS appears unable to resolve IP addresses."

And I also get a Key Ports error:
"Failed to connect to the service. This could be due to improper proxy or firewall settings. Please review your proxy and firewall settings. Proxy settings can be accessed through Windows Live Messenger Options. For firewall settings, please see the retailer's instructions."

It is not a problem with my router, I can access the internet fine from this laptop. I have looked on google but no answers have worked for me so far. I hope that if I get a good answer to this, it will also help many other people in the future.

Thanks much!

Hi, when you did the restore ,, did you check to see if ,,the nanny program is running again on your computer because apparently for your benefit the restore was active and probably restored the program. If you chose a date before you installed the nanny program then the only explanation is what the other answer refers to,,, but lets assume you chose a date within the time frame of the nanny program. When you say you cant use any of the browsers but,,, are they opening up if this is true then you can ,,for explorer go to tools>internet options>then LAN settings> uncheck the use proxy>then click ok ...here is the potential place of the problem stopping you from accessing the internet. Hope the best of luck.

First open up a command prompt: start menu >run >type "cmd" then enter

Then type "ipconfig" without the quotes.

There should be something that says IPV4 and then an IP address.

If the IP addy starts with 169 then that means it is either not connected to the network or DHCP on your router is not working. I would try confirming that you are connected ot the wireless and if your not gettting a 192 IP addy then do a factory reset on the router.

Try disabling your firewall before all that for a quick test.

If that doesnt work I would go into your network settings and look under the IPV4 option. Ensure that everything is set to automatic.

First of all.. set the IP address of your router to 192.168.1.2 and configure ur router to the factory settings by entering 192.168.1.1 in your browser and using "admin" as the username and password, without quotes.

Once u have configured it, go to ur modem properties again and set the IP address and DNS again to automatic.

**You can use other DNS like google"s or others that you know. However, your open DNS will be more secure than the others.**

cheers....

domicile windows messenger makes use of TCP ports 80, 443, and 1863 to sign in. the 1st step is to make constructive that any firewalls you have, alongside with application (such through fact the domicile windows integrated firewall) and hardware (consisting of a instantaneous router) are allowing information that makes use of those ports.
