For me, it would be less complicated if you just use a router. Wireless router -- connect all your pc to that wireless router because basically a wireless router will also have a LAN ports where you can physicall connect at least 4 computers and then since its also a wireless router, it can allow multiple wireless computers to get on the internet.. No servers, no switch and no wireless access point. For me, a wireless access point is just a like a router that extends the range of your wireless signals.

I just bought a brand new NetGear wireless router on Friday and had the same problem trying to install it Saturday. I contacted customer support and got a guy named "Nick" (yeah, right) whose Indian accent was so hard to understand, that it took about 45 minutes, but the end result was that I have the router installed and it works. The guy also helped me with the laptop that already had a USB wireless connection. He helped me to configure the laptop for optimum performance with the router. I think that the key to configuring these gadgets it to let the software detect the settings automatically. My problem started when I tried to enter data manually. Another thing would be that you have to connect these devices in a certain order. Your modem should be turned off and unplugged before unplugging the Ethernet cable from the computer. The wireless router should be unplugged from the power source until everything is hooked up. Nick, the Indian tech support guy, (as difficult as he was to understand), did help me get everything working, but it required unplugging my modem several times. Good luck. I know I'm probably not much help. I would recommend NetGear if you find yourself not able to use the Belkin device.

If it has set as access point the biggest problem may be that you lose dhcp and all ip info. With the router on carefully press the reset for about 5 secs. As you release it the lights should flash and it will reboot. The default setting for it's ip should be available. See the setup instructions for this. Go to your wired network connection properties and set the IP address to the same first 3 numbers, then set the last to a few numbers away from this.

(If the router default is :

192.168.1 254 set 192.168.1.250, you can not use 255 or higher. for router default :

192.168.2.1 set 192.168.2.10)

Connect to the router with the LAN cable supplied. In your browser enter the router address, say 192.168.2.1 and enter.

The admin password is normally admin or is left blank. Check the setup instructions. Go to the setting for type and ensure router is set as a router. Then carry out the full configuration, saving each change as you go. Test the final config with the cable, set up encryption, I advise changing the admin password to something you will remember. Remove the cable. Then use the wireless utility on any machine you want to connect, search for your network set the encryption and connect. Return to you wired card tcp/ip and re-set it to auto.

usually when you change the router to an access point it asks for you to enter a new IP address for the AP, most default to something like 192.168.2.255 or 254, you could just try all 255 combinations. As for the wireless led, it will only show up when a wireless device ie laptop is connected to that AP. Worst case scenario just do a hard reset, on the back of the device should be a small hole with a button, just use a pin or something and hold it down for like 20 seconds until all the lights turn off and resets and all the factory defaults will be back so it will go back to 192.168.2.1 and you just have to reconfigure the router which you will be doing anyways.

Unplug it and reset it. What do you mean tried to turn it into a wireless access point? What did you think it was to begin with?
