my laptop and home computer are older with just Windows XP. I want to get on the internet with the laptop to download a software program without having to go to a wi-fi spot like I usually do. I have disconnected the Ethernet cable from my home computer and plugged it into my laptop but no internet connection happens. I'm fairly certain there is some kind of configuration i need to do to the laptop so it will accept the ether cable. A tech told me it could be I have to take some drivers off the laptop but i need a second opinion from some computer geeks out there, Thanks.

Taking drivers OFF of the computer makes as much sense as a fish riding a bicycle. Your tech friend is an idiot. The first thing to do is open network connections in control panel and see if there IS a lan connection. If yes, right click and enable it. If not, you need to install the lan driver for that model on the pc mfgs website.

You might need to re install the drivers for that Ethernet port. You could verify this thru Device Manager from your control panel.

Or

Go to control panel and then network and try to disable the Wifi and enable local network connection

Good luck

Try to turn off your wireless adapter.
