Actually a router and a switch are basically the same thing according to networking lingo, but the differentiation has been made by the market place.

In the market place, routers are seen as more than just connectivity devices. The are seen as providing firewalling, port forwarding, and DHCP services. A switch only does the selective direction of traffic between networks without doing firewalling, port forwarding or DHCP.

If you want protection, then use a "router" if you're just adding equipment to your LAN that is already protect from the internet, use a switch.

A router acts as a junction between two or more networks to transfer data packets among them. A router is different from a switch. A switch connects devices to form a Local area network (LAN).

Well...there are different kind of switches....but the main function of the switch is to connect different computers to form a network. The function of the router...is to function as a DHCP server, provide shortest path for the data... connect to different networks...etc.

But there are advances switches...which do some of the routers work...eg. IPswitches...

Router is a switch, that can act as a DHCP server, contains a firewall to protect the network.

http://ipcop.org can turn any older computer of about 100 to 800Mhz, into a very good firewall/router, to protect a home or small business, of up to about 30 clients.
