I've had both computers for a while but I'm trying to share files between them, when they were both on XP they shared no problems, and the Win 7 computer shares fine with other win 7 computers, but it's the mixing of the two that's the problem

They are both the same work-group
both are on the same network, connected to the same router
both are assigned their IP addresses by DHCP
The win 7 PC can see the XP PC, but not vice versa
The Win 7 PC says the XP's network location is not available, the same happens on both PC's when i enter the name manually in run
All permissions are there as far as win 7 is concerned, and all firewalls are off

can anyone suggest what the problem is?

see if the link helps you. what bitter time wasted has taught me is Win7 has to format the partition I want to publish on the network. What most howto instructions fail to consider also is Win7 is strictly NTFS or eFAT file format.

With Linux I definitely have to let Win7 create a partition in NTFS on the Win7 local drive. Then also I have to mount that partition every reboot. With Mac you might as well set up two servers or email the files you want to share over the internet using your mail program.

Win7 was meant to network to Win7. Period.

This problem occurs if the Link-Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder component is not installed on the Windows XP-based computer.

In order to establish the connection between the windows 7 machine and XP machine, try downloading and installing the Link-Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) hotfix. Check the link mentioned below:
