Question:
separate DHCP scope for Mitel phones?

We are trying to set up a separate DHCP scope for our Mitel phones. There are two separate subnets on the network. There is 10.10.x.x which will be for workstations, printers, etc. Then for the phones there is a 10.20.x.x network. There is routing set up between the two networks. The DHCP server has been configured with two separate scopes, the 10.10.x.x which has been in use for a while, and we've just added the 10.20.x.x scope which we want the phones to use. But how do we get the phones to use the 10.20.x.x? And how do we keep the computers from getting 10.20 addresses? It seems the phones contact the DHCP server trying to get a 10.10.x.x address (which does not have the right Options, of course). And I noticed a computer get a 10.20 address. Thank you for any help you can provide!

I believe you can do what you are trying by using dynamic vlans and a radius server ( am speaking for Cisco hardware, I am not terribly familiar with other architectures). It will involve identifying each MAC address that will be used, so this may be a little more admin overhead than you are willing to spend. I suggest you look into the TCO of a radius server and the admin overhead, and compare that to what you think you will accomplish by using separate subnets, and see where you are.

Either use MAC addresses or create another instance of the DHCP server. Keep the DHCP boxes on separate VLAN interfaces ( logically) to make sure that devices stay on separate address space. keep in mind that there is no really good reason to keep these separate as they travel the same path. If you eventually will use softphones on PC you'll break you voice IP scheme anyway.

Use VLANs and one dhcp scope and manage that way.

You can use a switch with VLAN to segregate your network. In other word, even though you have computers and phones connected in the same switch, you can create a vlan for the computers and a vlan for the phones. Just link your dhcp server with each vlan.

The phones will get a 10.10 address if they are connected to the 10.10 network. Any devices attached to teh 10.20 network will pull 10.20 addresses. Check which ports are connected to which network.
