Whenever I'm playing my online games the topic of my ping always comes up. I usually have a ping of 6 or less and everybody else has 100-200+. Is having a higher ping better? Why is mine so low and what exactly does ping do? Thanks.

Ping is a computer network tool used to test whether a particular host is reachable across an IP network. In multiplayer online video games, ping refers to the network latency seen between a player's computer, called a client, and the game server (or another client). This could be reported as an averaged time in milliseconds, or more generally as "low ping" or "high ping. In most cases, having a low ping is desirable because lower latency provides smoother gameplay by allowing more frequent updates of game data.

A ping is a query sent to another computer, and it is usually timed. Typically in online computer games, a high ping is bad and means that the computer is taking longer to respond. A higher ping means the connection to the server is slow and can result in poor gameplay. To answer your question, lower ping is better.

Ping is a computer network tool used to test whether a particular host is reachable across an IP network. Ping works by sending ICMP “echo request” packets ("Ping?") to the target host and listening for ICMP “echo response” replies (sometimes dubbed "Pong!" as a metaphor from the Ping Pong table tennis sport.) Using interval timing and response rate, ping estimates the round-trip time (generally in milliseconds although the unit is often omitted) and rate of packet loss between hosts (can differ).

In your case, you are asking about ping as it relates to gaming and from what I have researched you should be a very happy gamer. In gaming, a low ping is good as it indicates a good internet connection and the lower the ping count the better. Read the following short article and then get ready to blow away the competition!
Ping is how fast you connect to something. You want a lower ping (1-50), it means your computer connect faster.

Hey,
To download for free Table Tennis Pro you can click here: http://bit.ly/1qXDfd2
it's the full version, avaiable for free! very fast to install
The objective of the game is to develop the ability to hit the little ball back well with your bat. At first it may seem a little difficult to handle because it varies a lot with your mouse’s sensitivity, but don’t worry, with just a little practice you can become an expert in this type of game.
It's amazing.

A protocol that sends a message to another computer and waits for acknowledgment, often used to check if another computer on a network is reachable. The value usually represents the time it takes to get a return, so lower is better.

In this context it is a representation of the time it takes for messages to pass between your computer and the server. Smaller is better.
