is it cable or dsl? assuming its cable, your neighbors and you share the same connection, causing your speed to drop signifigantly when heavy users are on. try your connection late at night if you can, as not many users will be online. if its dsl, your phone lines might be of low quality, causing speed to drop.

It's absolutely nothing to do with your computer (unless it's at a very low specs) your set up or your browser (as certain people keep prattling on about Firefox!) it's to with the otherside of your outside wall!! In other words the system your connect to.

Your 4 Mb's hasn't gone anywhere. It wasn't there in the first place! What it boils down to is, you saying your old provider was a constant 2 Mb. Changing your provider isn't going to change that one iota. You are still using the same equipment as you were before.

The same phone lines, the same exchanges. Nothing has changed except the name! All these companies pay rental to BT to use their equipment.

The only slight difference you might get is because one provider has less customers than another, therefore there are less people on their mainframe and using it at any one time.

The only way forward is cable fibre optic technology. You may pay slightly more for the priviledge, but cable has no hang ups like ADSL has because it has no resitance to encounter!

Cable's standard will be 10 Mb by the Summer, 20 Mb is available now and 50 Mb within 18 months to 2 years! Yes it does slow down a bit depending on the time of day and how many are on the system but nothing like ADSL. Also there is no capping and unlimited use providing you keep within the fair usage policy i.e. not downloading a 100 x 3 hour movies or a 1,000 music albums a month!

hp 256 mb memory 700 mhz dell 2 GB memory core 2 duo 2 ghz just tried both on same download. both were about 500kb/sec on a 5 mb cable connection. If you have a high speed connection slow downloads are usually due to the source. Basically download speeds are really slow even compared to a slower computer. My internet connection speed is about 4900 kb/s, but that isn't the speed a download comes in. If you are talking about surfing websites and "downloading " webpages or videos, not files, then the speed of the computer would have more of an effect. older computers could be loaded down with junk and seem slower too. my HP has a fairly new install.

1, is anybody els using your wi-fi connection? set up your

router with Mac address filer on. (only allows computers to connect on your Mac address list). Set up encryption and password.

this will stop people connecting to your broadband with out you knowing.

2, set up your router to e-mail you when somebody try to connect to your wi,fi.

3, which sites did you do your ping speed test?

4, have you got your router plug into the 'master' (primary) phone socket? any extension socket will be slower than your master socket. Alway use the master for the best speed.

5, use fire fox internet browser, (faster and better than internet explorer), clear out your internet history etc.

6, a possible problem is your browser is hijacked.

check to make sure your home page is the one you set up.

run a spyware check. Do you use a good spyware program?

spyware doctor is the best one ive every used.

included free with the google pack.

7, passable bandwidth bottle neck at your telephone exchange (only if you are on ADSL).

phone your ADSL supplier to complane, force then to fix your speed.

8, Cable? can be slow if your cable is shared, phone cable and force to fix.

does you new supplier or old supplier use:-

local loop unbundled (suppliers own kit in the exchange)

Traffic Shaping (A trick used by all cheaper providers; during peak times or heavy traffic they may cut the speed of your connection).

Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".

Everytime you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Regisry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!

There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

sorry, your ISP stinks = [

we left at&t [really sbc of texas] for Cavalier, a northeastern regional telecom [fiber optics]

we went from 1.5mbps to 50mbps immediately

after midnight it is triple digits, pages load in 5 seconds or less

a 100mb file downloads in 3 minutes -- it is your isp

where do you live?

4.9mb = 1024kbps x 4.49 = 5017.6kbps / 8 = 627.2kbps

Theoretically you should be getting 627.2kbps

Take into consideration network traffic at different peak times

510kbps download is not too bad for your connection. I see no problem
