Question:
Verizon upgraded my connection, but port forwarding settings reset. How do I port forward for...?

Verizon finally fixed my connection problems, maximizing the DSL speed (read: Finally gave me what I paid for) and sent me a new router. Now the port forwarding settings I set up for "Bittorrent" and "Limewire" aren't there and the new router's page is a bit more complex than before. Also, now my Trillian won't connect. However, accessing web content, downloading and streaming videos, and such are about twice as fast.
Here is what my port forwarding is doing - first I have to create a setting, and the options are:
Protocol: tcp/udp/both [I read to do both]
Global PortStart
Global PortEnd
Base HostPort
Direction: In/Out
I'm assuming Global PortStart and PortEnd are where I put in the ports (which i read for bittorent to put 6881 to 6889, but what about for limewire?) Base HostPort is new to me. I'm not sure what to do with that one. And the Direction I'm not sure what to put.
Finally, anyone have an idea why Trillian (chat client incorporating AIM and Windows Live) doesnt work now?

The article you read about 6881-6889 is out of date. Because those were the ports originally used by bittorrent, ISPs now block those ports.

A single port within the 49152-65534 range should be chosen in your bittorrent client.

If you are using BitTorrent 6 series, then the setting is at Ctrl+P>Connection. (You should also disable "Randomize port each time Bittorrent starts)

You are correct that both TCP and UDP protocols need to be allowed.

You did not list your new router's name so check out portforward.com's router index. Choose the make and model of your router and then your bittorrent program and you will get a guide specific to your router and program. (If you are using BitTorrent 6.x, then choose uTorrent as the new Bittorrent is a rebranded uTorrent with the same interface)

Try using a 3rd party application to do your port forwarding.

I am pretty sure you cant portfoward FiOs because it uses a fiber optic cable, which not many people have
