Question:
Server 2003 network problems?

A 64-bit server 2003 system is having network difficulties.
To keep it simple, I've compiled a list of facts:

SUCCESS:

- All network ports are functional
- All cables are tested and working
- A link is always established at 100mbps
- A network (IP) address is always obtained from the router's DHCP
- The network diagnostic tools show no problems with either of the network card ports

FAILURE:

- Ping tests fail approximately 50% of the time
- Browser tests result in failure to load pages, or extremely slow network speeds (< 1mbps)
- The problem occurs on both ports of the integrated dual Broadcom gigabit ethernet ports
- Both ports started displaying this behaviour simultaneously
- A complete format and reinstall has occurred with the same problem occurring immediately
- Reinstalling drivers has not resolved the problem
- Testing on workgroup and domain setups yields the same problem
- Having DHCP & DNS installed or absent as server roles has no effect

UNCLEAR:

- Testing with a USB interface for a wireless connection was successful on first attempt, but has since resulted in the same lack of connection - the successful connection could not be reproduced in later attempts under the same set of circumstances.

If anyone can shed some light on this issue, it would be much appreciated.

would agree with DAN ... and really dont think the problem could be with the sever ... i would first of all check with the the router side of thing ... and setting up the duplx manually... also since you mentioned you router support 100 mbps .. i would probaly disable extrat featurses like jumbo frame etc on the servier side of thing. so that ever thing is as the very basic and then move on.

It sounds like your server is fine. Are you sure the router is completely ok? I wasn't sure if the network ports you mentioned were just on the server or on your router as well. Have you tested LAN (behind your router) functionality like file sharing? If your LAN traffic is ok then you're probably looking at an issue with your ISP.

Follow up: Yea it sounds like your router might be on its way out. In the meantime, since you said it'd be a while before you replace your router you can try this. If you have a basic switch laying around (one you're certain is good), you can still try to see if traffic between your server and, say, a laptop is normal. Plug each device into the switch, manually assign your IP addresses, and try sharing some large files between the two.
