I can't access my Router IP by typing in my IP in the Browser Bar - Please Help!?

Just as a reminder, I have windows 7.

I am using the correct IP address, Start > Run > ipconfig --- Default Gateway
I typed the default gateway into the browser bar, and it gave me a warning (website may not me safe etc.etc.) So I continued anyways, and then it popped a box open with username / password security -- However, it was labeled as Thomson. (Which is definitely not me).

And so I tried the username / password anyways, and what usually works for me wasn't working for whoever's IP I was attempting to access.

Anyone know to fix this?
Thanks

If you buy and install a router, it starts with giving itself a ip-4 address: 192.168.0.1 and it gives itself a name/password nearly always "admin/admin".

If you want to access the software of you router type http://192.168.0.1/ in the browser bar. Then you are prompted for the user name and password.

If you have forgotten your user name/password for the router you can always reboot your router to the initial state. Look in the manual of the router how to do this. (mostly by pressing a reboot button for a lengthy period of time). After that the standard user name/password and ip-number applies again.

If you never have changed the user name password of your router it is still the ones given you by the initial setting. (So you might have a router made by a company named "Thomson"). The initial setting can be found in the user manual.

If you have lost your user manual, you can always download a new one from the internet.

After the router is installed, if you connect computers to the router, the computer ports get their own ip-number. Mostly 192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.3 etc. It is possible to use other internal numbers, but to keep save hold on to the 192.168 internal network numbers.

Couple of things:

If typing the default gateway IP gets you to a router called Thompson then maybe your are connected to someone else's router!

Other point: you can normally only connect to the router management page if you are connected with a cable - not connected with wireless. This is for security and is the norm on all routers I have seen.

If you are connected wirelessly you probably accidentally connected to your neighbor's network. Disconnect and check the list and make sure you connect to your own and set it to auto. Also make sure any other networks on the list aren't set to auto. Then try again.

You said it yourself... "I am manually connected to my modem"

If you're connected to the modem, then OF COURSE you cant get to the router. You need to be connected to the router if you expect to get to it.
