I have a mac, and I don't have wifi of my own, so I use whatever connections it picks up.. there are several connections it gets, "linksys" "defualt" "bob" "belnkin_wireless" (these aren't locked) but when I try and select a connection, it won't connection, it will say "connection timeout" why?

its not that its stable at all. these connections that you're getting on are other people's connections (basically stealing internet). its a common thing that happens. wireless connection in general are very unstable since they work off of signals. basically like cell phones. you're talking to your mom in the car on your phone then you go under a bridge and the call is lost and she calls back all pissed. same thing with internet. you never know when the signal will die out on you. (plus since they arent locked connections, other people might be trying to connect too which will make it an even worse connection.)

Probably a bad signal.

There's no reason it should work, so it's not surprising that it doesn't.
