A network is, like others say, 2 or more computers or devices that can talk to each other.

The reason networks were created in the first place was for military personnel to communicate to each other quickly. It was very secure because it was never heard of before, unlike phone systems, other military didn't know how to penetrate it.

Networks now are used for data transffering/sharing, the internet being the biggest network. It actually started out in the western part of the US with 7 routers spanning, I believe, 3 or 4 states, with under 250 people using it.

Sorry just a little history there lol Ahh, I'm such a geek... lol

As after marriage a peson required 3-5 room home same way when you need to keep 2 or more computers must be connected in network. Network is distributed under following catagories.

PAN-Personal Area Network(Upto 10 meters)

LAN-Local Area Network(10 Meters-4 SQ-KMS)

MAN-Metropolitan Area Network(4-40 SQ-KMS)

WAN-Wide Area Network(Multi city Nationwide-Around the Globe)

The requirement of Computer as hosts capabilities defines network and positions of them.

IBM is the best example for WAN network.

A network is pretty much a bunch of computers that are connected together. The most common network (work, home) connects multiple computers using wireless or ethernet cable thru a device called a router. This allows files to be shared among the different computers & for devices (like printers to be shared)

Also in a way, the internet is also like a big network, as when you type in an address or search for something, it requests goes to the recieving computer & sends back the result that your looking for. Also same for any files you download.

A network is 2 or more computers connected together. If there were no network (the internet is a network), you could only write documents, play local games, listen to CDs, etc. No email, not web, no downloading ...

A network is any group of computer equipment linked together in some fashion for communication/data transfer purposes. The reason it is needed is to have access to things like the internet, or even your home phone for that matter.

Networks are typically used as a medium, which enables, and simplifies, the sharing of resources. For a better definition, please use a dictionary or webopedia.
