Problems with LAN and router?

I have given my old laptop to my partner's parents but we can't set up a wired connection. We spoke to their IP's helpdesk and they said it might be an issue with the LAN card. The laptop still connects to my own network wirelessly so does this rule out a LAN problem? (or are there LAN differences between a wired and wireless connection?). My partner has tried his laptop with his parent's router and was able to achieve a wired connection straightaway. He contacted the helpdesk again and they reset a lot of things on my old laptop but it still couldn't connect. We pinged him and he said that he received it but he was unable to send anything back so he concluded the router was faulty and is sending a new one. But....my partner was able to connect with a wired connection to the router so how can it be faulty?! I am not techy at all (as you can tell!) so am hoping someone somewhere may be able to shed some light on this problem. I've spoken to an IT friend and he can't suggest anything more than the helpdesk have already suggested. Any help greatly appreciated!

If the wired connection does not work on your old laptop then I would suspect a possible issue with the laptops internal network card. It could be as simple as the driver not being installed.

On the other hand it may be easier to purchase a wireless PCMCIA card or wireless USB card for the laptop rather then trying to make the internal LAN card on the laptop work.

How old id old? On the old lap top check tcp/ip duplex, speed, etc make sure that it is attempting to acquire dns info through dhcp and does or verify your lan settings and create manually for the laptop. go to windows site and search for their tcp/ip reset tool... maybe there is something stuck in the old laptops registry that hsa become a 1 bit wonder.

One thing you may need to try is going into your network connections and try to disable the wireless connection, then go to your internet otions on the control panel and run the connection wizard and it just mite pick up the wired connection.
