Trying to connect to WiFi, get an error saying "failed to obtain it address" so I do what any normal person does first and restart everything. That doesn t work so I notice the router is ancient and mabee needs to have a firmware upgrade. I go to the linksys website for the router, back up the configuration file and proceed to upgrade. Now this is where stuff gets weird.in the middle of the update the page refreshes to a Web page that says there is no internet connection. I can no longer access the Internet via cabe/router and my WiFi network no longer shows up in my network connections on both the laptop and mobile devices even though the router is on. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advanced

You need to wipe the slate clean and start over. Factory settings, then try upgrading firmware. If it doesn't work again, you have at least figured out an idea of where or what the problem is. The process of diagnosing is painful because it takes a lot of testing. You start by eliminating factors one by one. If that doesn't seem to work you eliminate (not delete) everything that will still allow the computer to boot. Then add the things back in. This is not easy, because people don't know what to eliminate or disable, and every system is different. For one example, you might have anti-virus or anti-malware that's preventing you from changing the router.

Unless there is an actual fault or there are new facilities in a new firmware that you need, I never recommend upgrading router firmware.

Backing up the configuration can be pointless as many new versions of firmware do not recognise old configurations.

Reset the router back to the factory defaults using the reset procedure defined for the router. Then connect to the router using an Ethernet cable so that you can set up the required configuration. This will include the login information required for the router to connect to your ISP. Get the information from the ISP if you don't know it. Your ISP might also need the MAC address from the router.

Next, try accessing the Internet from your Ethernet connection. Get that working before worrying about WiFi.

Finally configure the WiFi.

You might do better disabling WiFi in that router and getting a wireless access point that supports 802.11n or even 802.11ac operation. 802.11bg is slow by modern standards.

I do wish people asked questions BEFORE doing the risky procedure. Upgrading a router incorrectly tends to leave you with an expensive paperweight.

You seemed to have left out a few steps. Did you:

a. Download the new firmware file to your laptop?

b. Disconnect ALL cables/wires (except power) from your router? Disable Wi-Fi?

c. Connect only your laptop/desktop to the router via an Ethernet cable?

d. Backup your current firmware? Yes.

e. Write down the config settings so that you can enter them again after the upgrade?

f. *Pray for 30 seconds, then start the firmware upgrade?

g. See if the upgrade completed successfully? Can you access your router's web portal? Did the firmware version change?

h. Re-enter your config settings?

i. Reconnect all cables to your router?

Is your computer connected by Ethernet cable while attempting to upgrade the firmware? You certainly cannot do that using WiFi because that may not be active or may be reset to default settings during firmware upgrade.
