Connection timeout simply means that your computer gave up waiting for a response from the router. It did not receive a reply.
As to the exact reason, you would need to provide more information.
For example, does it time out just doing certain things or going to particular web sites? Or does it simply not connect to the Internet at all?
How is your router connected to your macbook? Via an ethernet cable? Wireless?
Do you have an IP address assigned to you by your router? Or did your computer fail to get an address and just give itself one?

WHAT IT MEANS IS THAT YOUR ROUTER IS VIRTUALLY A SERVER, SENDING YOUR MAC FILES BACK AND FORTH. TYPICALLY, SERVERS ARE BUSILY SERVING MORE THAN ONE USER, SO THEY ARE CONFIGURED TO "DROP" CLIENT COMPUTERS AFTER PRE-DETERMINED AMOUNTS OF INACTIVITY. THIS IS TO ALLOW OTHER USERS TO ACCESS THE RESOURCES, SINCE YOU ARE APPARENTLY NOT NEEDING THEM...INACTIVITY SIGNALS THE TIMEOUT, AND YOUR COMPUTER, AS THE CLIENT, WILL TIME OUT A NAMED SERVER IF THERE IS NO RESPONSE IN A LIKEWISE PERIOD OF INACTIVITY... THE SETTINGS CAN BE FOUND IN THE PROPERTIES TABS OF THE DEVICES THEMSELVES... GO TO YOUR NETWORK FOLDER, RIGHT CLICK THE DEVICES YOU NEED TO CHANGE, AND LOOK FOR DEVICE TIMERS. THE NUMBER STRINGS ARE IN SECONDS, SOMETIMES MILLISECONDS ON SOME MACS...(EXAMPLE:120000 IN ms = two minutes...) ONE OR BOTH OF YOUR DEVICES IS NOT SENDING OR ANSWERING IN THE SHORT AMOUNT F TIME, CAUSING THE ERROR MESSAGE AND LOST CONNECT.
