"Web" is not an acronym, it literally means "web", as in a spider web, or a "web of information". It refers to the mesh topology that the network known as the Internet employs. A mesh topology in computer networking simply means every node (any device connected to the Internet) is connect to every other node by multiple, redundant routes, so that any single node (or group of nodes) can still operate should one route be disconnected. In a similar way to a spider's web, where each point on the web is connected to other points by several strands of silk, so that if one should break, the whole structure doesn't come apart.

The word "web" in world wide web doesn't mean anything really, more symbolic. The Internet, or web is represented or drawn to look like a spider's web. You start from the center of the web (your computer) and from there you can go different directions by following the various links. That is the best way I can describe it.

The word web is used as a metaphore for the way sites are connected together, like a spider's web.

It isn't an acronym for anything. It is a conceptual description of how the "web" works. From any given point there are multiple paths to get to any other point on the web. This is a pretty good representation of concept of documents containing links to other documents that "the web" provides.

web, as in connecting many points at the same time and interconnecting them again. if u imagine that all computers with internet access are connected by a line you would see a enormous web covering the whole world.

im not technically minded nor computer literate to that extend but i would imagine it means something like

a spider web.. it branches and links to different sections all over the place... a massive spider web is the best way to think of it.. stretching across the world

It is a simplified way to illustrate the original way the a WEB operates: it has a starting central point and then is "linked" to and from other points via bookmarks or hyperlinks, in an ever expanding fashion.

think of how a spider web is connected. now think of the internet world how its all connected like a web. basically you can connect to it from anywhere in the world

I like to think that it's a metaphor for how every site is connected to each other in one way or another.

It's probably not that, but it's a nice thought. =]
