I've been trying to setup a home network between my laptop and my old desktop. Laptop(xp) Desktop(98)
I did the Network Wizard and all that and finally I got the Desktop to open files on my Laptop so that was connected. But I can't connect from Laptop to my Desktop. It shows it on my Workgroup but when I click on that computer it gives me a message "\\Comp2 wasn't able connect. Ask administrator if you have access to the computer. Network path unable to Connect."

Desktop to Laptop Connected
Laptop to Desktop Unable to Connect

Connecting through router, all cables are connected to both computers. and both computer appear on my workgroup.

So can someone please help me with this problem. What should I do? I looked at the troubleshoot and other places but they didnt have anything.

perhaps you should have your desktop enabled for file sharing. just because they are connected doesnt mean you can access files easily. Or you can name some folders to be "shared". if you do this, then there is no need for a user and password access. Windows XP lets you share a computer's disks and folders with other computers on the network, using a method called Simple File Sharing. And it really is simple. If a disk or folder is shared, everyone on the network can access it. I think this is what's on your XP. On your Win98 however which is the desktop, just click on this link : http://computer.howstuffworks.com/home-network4.htm

check if you are able to ping the desktop from the laptop.

check for any firewalls setup in your desktop because your incoming connection is rejected by some sort of firewall in the desktop.

disable any firewall such as norton internet security , macfee.

Check if you have password enabled user accounts.if not set the password for user accounts

if you need any help please post your email id
