Question:
Can you point DNS records to a subdomain?
2009-03-19 19:57:10 UTC
Here is the situation:

I have to install three websites onto our hosting account. I do not want the URLs to include /directory, but I am not very comfortable with mod_rewrite rules. So, can you point DNS records to a subdomain, or do they have to point towards a root directory?

Thank you very much for any help!

Most web servers can re-direct based on the URL, to separate sub-directories. I know IIS and Apache can do it. It depends on your hosting service as to how to do it (if they allow it/have proper access to config files, etc.)

In my case, I use a web admin tool to create 5 web sites on one server, but the server is mine, and I have full access to all tools as root (as required)

DNS resolves a name to an IP address. You could change/edit some of the A or CNAME records I suppose, but I've not seen that as a solution to multiple web sites on one server.... (not to say it can't be done - I just don't know that option)
