Question:
Router & Cable Modem problem!!! DSN Errors?

Okay, so my husband and I bought separate wireless router with cable modem. I have Charter Communications Internet package bundle and for the 2 weeks that we've had service, the internet gets disconnected every 5-10 minutes!!!

It's frustrating and it's even more frustrating trying to get HELP through them damn customer service people that are too shallow to really help out unless we shove money right in their faces.

Basically, my husband uses the PS3 Network to play his CODMW2 online - whenever he's on a killing streak, he gets disconnected but when he sucks, his connection is good. So I told him that maybe his PS3 is the problem? Because when he's online with his Ps3, I start laggin on the desktop computer. But when he's not on, I am fine with few disconnections. But that just rules out that the cause of our internet getting disconnected is solely from his PS3 >=/

We have already rebooted the router twice and done everything the representatives told us from shutting everything off and unplugging modem and router and turning them on again.

Basically, how am I suppose to SYNC the router to the modem? My husband says that it seems the router and modem seem to be kicking eachother out???

Help =(

Which exact Motorola Modem do you have? This is a critical question because several of the Motorola Modems are actually "gateways". If you have a gateway or "nated" modem, meaning it issues a private IP address for your computer, then you have an IP conflict and that will cause drop outs when multiple machines are used! Motorola and Linksys use the same private IP ranges on many of the units.

So check the modem manual, if you see that it is a gateway modem or nat modem, login to the interface and set the modem to "BRIDGE" so that it does NOT issue a private IP to the Linksys router. That will solve the issue.

ADD - Since you have the 5101U be sure you are ONLY using the ethernet connection, it should connect to the WAN/Internet side of the Linksys. Connect both computers to the linksys, you also need to port forward to the correct computer for many games! If port forwarding is not done, you will have the drop out issue for games.

See http://portforward.com for details --- you do not need to buy the automatic setup program just read the directions! THE PS 3 Will need port forwarding in the Linksys to work correctly.

Do not try to use the USB and Ethernet or you will have the issue you describe.

It seems that you're using up a lot of bandwidth... probably more than the level of internet service you subscribed for. Typically if you get a 10Meg connection to the internet from the modem (not from the router or computer) you'll be doing great. If you're using DSL, dial-up, 3G/4G link-ups then you won't be happy with the jittery internet connection. It will become intermittent or you get disconnected. Basically, your net gets overloaded on your end by the sudden demand. The more data is being transfered (to/from) the computer and game combined at any given time, the slower if any internet the connection speed will be.
