How do domain names work?

Can someone please explain how a domain works. If I make a website it comes up with an ip(Like its supposed to) but how do businesses like godaddy and smaller ones make it so that you can make a domain name. Is there a possible way to avoid buy a domain without a subdomain? If not can someone point me to a cheap domain provider.

You don't need a domain name to have a website if thats what you're asking. A domain name simply directs someone to the place your site is stored. Look for a free web hosting service and load up your site.

Honestly, if you want to have your site hosted in the USA and you want a .com domain then Godaddy is the best option for you.
