Generally it is best to go with the faster connection all other things being equal, in this case cable. However if the cable company has oversold your neighborhood you may experience slow times. That isn't likely anymore, but it used to be a problem. If your cable company still uses archaic equipment you may want to ask around.

For all the DSL haters look around, it can be so much faster than cable. Take a look a Japan and Korea. 100 Meg pipelines with no Bandwidth restrictions. It is slow in the US because of restrictions the phone companies faced that the cable companies didn't face.

John H. is on the right track. Check any cable providers website and they have disclaimers all over them about how they cannot garauntee speed because there are too many factors involved in your overall internet connection speed: Read the disclaimer at the bottom of this page...http://www.comcast.com/8mbps/?CMP=ILC-fcomcastnetdcable2

Fact is, there is only one factor involved with the cable network connection...shared bandwidth. Compare bandwidth to a garden hose; the more people that sign on to a cable network, the smaller your hose gets (the less water that can be delivered). On a cable network, you would get everybody elses information delivered to your home. Your modem would have to sift through the information.

On a DSL connection, your speed is garaunteed. You will not find that disclaimer mentioned above on any DSL website. The problem with DSL is that it's not available everywhere. The fact that it is not available everywhere has made it easy for the cable companies to give it the label of an inferior product. If you want proof of this check the following link: http://www.comcast.com/shop/buyflow/default.ashx

6 meg cable connection is "up to 4x faster than 1.5 Mbps DSL". You know what's crazy???? 6 meg DSL is also 4 times faster than 1.5 DSL. DUH!!!!

Be really careful about how much you listen to advertisement. It looks as though you have done your homework. If the choice were mine, I would go with the DSL just because you can get the garaunteed connection speed and your connection speed won't be contingent on everybody else in your neighborhood.

I have used both DSL and Cable. Mostly cable, I tried DSL for a few weeks when ATT/Yahoo was making deals. They offered several levels some with very good speeds. DSL requires that you have a land line phone ..added cost Cable no land line required - you can use VoIP for phone (less than regular phone lines) or like many are doing now just have cell phone. I get good download speeds up to 4.4 Mbs with cable, usually in the 2.0-2.8 range, which is good enough for me. One problem I had with DSL (ATT/yahoo) was that I use ATT VoIP service and the ATT DSL modem/router would not work together. I tried for over two weeks to get the two services to work together. ATT DSL service support was terrible in this area. With Cable Internet and VoIP phone service and cell phones there is no need for a land line phone service.

Cable Internet Service is typically much faster than DSL service. Typical cable speeds are at 6 Mbps and up. Typical DSL speeds are running between 1.5 Mbps and 3.0 Mbps.

Cable internet is also much more widely available than DSL. It is not subject to the same limitations as DSL.

However, if FIOS is available, it blows both of them out of the water. If you have Verizon in your area, you should check to see if they offer FIOS.

DSL is less expensive than cable but is slower. Cable is faster. Typically cable download speed is 6-12 Mb/s and costs about $45 per month.

AT&T DSL Plans

AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet Express Package

384 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps download speed

128 to 384 Kbps upload speed $14.99/ month

AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet Pro Package

1.5 to 3.0 Mbps 384 to 512 Kbps $24.99 /month

AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet Elite Package

3.0 to 6.0 Mbps 384 to 608 Kbps $34.99

Your specs are totaly garbage:

"DSL vs cable modem. DSL 600 mbps vs cable 1.26 mbph"

600 mbps means 600 million bits per second

1.26 mbph means 1.26 million bits per hour

600 mbps

NOBODY has a 600 mbps internet speed. This is about 60 times faster than cable which is the fastest home service available.

1.26 mbph = 21 Kbps (Dial up speed)

B = Byte; b= bit; 1B=8b

Cable is faster than DSL, but depending on what you do you might not really notice a difference...especially if you are switching from dialup. DSL is cheaper than cable and is sufficient for most people as long as they have a landline phone already.

Cable is faster and DSL is 600 kilobites not megabites. It takes 1000 kilobites to get one megabite. Go with cable if you are looking for speed.

I have heard that DSL is slower. So I would go with cable modem.
