Question:
What is an Exchange Server? Where do I get one? How do I set it up? How much does it cost?

I know that I need an Exchange Server if my company wants to use Outlook Email or to just be able to look at one another's calendar info in Outlook. Is that something I can do myself or would I need an IT professional to do that? How about price?

Microsoft Exchange is an email/groupware system that runs on Windows Servers. If you are experienced in setting up a Windows Server 2003 domain and willing to spend some time learning the software, you should have no problem getting Exchange to work correctly. Otherwise, it might be easier to get a consultant to help with the installation. The installation itself isn't difficult, but troubleshooting problems can be a pain. As for the price, expect to spend around $2000 on software (plus whatever hardware and labor costs).

Outlook is only a mail client which displays your mail from the server to the client. Installing an exchange server is bit complicated if you are a beginner. You must have a Domain Controller and public ip range for the full fledged working of exchange server. Pricing is for the number of exchange servers and the number of exchange clients, I Guss...

An Exchange server is going to cost you several thousand dollars in licensing and hardware plus high annual costs in maintenance. Unless you are really smitten with Microsoft solutions, there are many alternatives that are cheaper, easier and in the opinion of some, better. You could also look at outsouced email/calendar solutions with companies like USA.NET (http://www.usa.net). Some alternative solutions are available that use Windows or Linux as mail servers. Examples are:

And there are many others. Almost all of them offer better solutions than Microsoft.
