How does one install a router?

Hi! i recently bought a awesome computer which uses a 300mps wireless PCI adapter which supports the latest 802.11n.
However when attempting to connect to the interent all i ever get is a poor signal and am often thrown off.
My router is over 5 years old so buying a new 802.11n router seems logical and should boost the signal and connection etc.

My question is - Do i need to get in contact with virgin media (my service provider) to install a new router? My current router is plugged into the AC socket and a modem. I have to use wireless.
The thing is my parents own this and they pay £40 a month for a bundle package including broadband phone, tv etc. but they have no info on it whatsoever and no virgin account, so the support i will get from virgin will be miniscule and would prove to be a lot of hassel.
If anyone can give me any info that'll be really helpful! thanks!
Ps. I understand that i need to install the router via a cd on my computer set a pin etc.

The answer is no

your new router should be able to be compatible as soon as you install it with the attached CD, so i dont think you will have any problems.

Hope this helped :D

Here's a page with easy-to-understand step by step instructions for how to install a new router.

My own guess is that the router will install without any problems. The 802.11n routers are supposed to be backward-compatible with older adapters.

Dude unplug the old one plug the new one up the same way run your setup and that's it. There's no clause in most isp contracts to forbid second party equipment .
