the computer slows down when I connect it to the internet (don't even need to use IE,opera, firefox, etc it just needs to be connected) and on top of that Norton keeps sending a pop-up about spam, either receiving or sending spam I don't know. Also when doing a scan for virus and such finds none. (Norton, Malwarebytes, SUPERantispyware, sophos, hitmanpro)
when connected to internet:
memory goes from 250~300 to 480~530
CPU usage from 2%~7% to 80%~99%

Windows XP pro
the computer is 5 years old
service pack 3
Intel(R) Celeron (R)
CPU 2.666 GHz
480 Ram
32.7 Gb hard drive
using ethernet cable

I would say you first of all scan your system with any good system cleaner such as Reginout to clean your system of excessive data that gives errors and cause slowdown. Also, uninstall unnecessary programs. I hope your problem will be solved. Few more steps will also help you:

1. Make Sure Your Hardware is Sufficient: Above and beyond everything you can do with software to optimize the function of your computer, making sure you have the proper hardware to support Windows is critical.

2. Clean Your Desktop: Is your Windows Desktop dotted with files? Have you noticed that your computer has been running slower and slower? Do you see the hard drive light often flashing while you wait for the computer to respond to an action? There are steps you can take to fix it. Read this article.

3. Scan Your Windows System for Errors: An operating system is a collection of files that perform different functions. It is possible, over time, that one or more of these system files has changed or become corrupted. If this happens, the speed of your system may decrease. By using a utility called “System File Checking”, it will inspect these files and correct any problem it finds.

4. Scan for Viruses, Spyware and Adware: Every Windows computer is vulnerable to viruses. Viruses are nasty little programs that cause both major and minor problems for users. Spyware and Adware are programs created by companies to find out more information about customers, so they can better market products to them. Spyware and Adware can load into computer memory and slow it down.Periodically scanning and removal of Viruses, Spyware and Adware is a great way to improve computer performance.

5. Uninstall Unused Programs: Over time, you may have accumulated programs on your computer that you do not use. When a program is installed, it creates connections between the program and the operating system. Even if you don’t use these programs, they can slow down your system. If you have the original program’s installation disk or file, removing programs will free up space on your computer and may speed up your system's performance.

6. Adjust Visual Effects for Better Performance: Windows provides a number of interesting visual effects including animated windows and fading menus. If you do not have enough operating memory (see above number 1), these effects can slow down your computer. Adjusting or reducing visual effects can make a difference.

7. Don’t Automatically Start Programs: Programs use operating memory (RAM, also called system resources). Unless you always use these programs, you can keep them from loading at Windows startup and speed both the booting of your computer and its performance. Manage startup programs using reginout.

8. Defragment Your Hard Drive: The more information and programs you have on your computer, the more it is likely that Windows has placed parts of the same file in different locations on your hard drive. It may do this for hundreds of files and programs, depending on how much space is available. Defragmenting the hard drive places all information for each file in one place. The result can be a faster computer experience.

Greetings. My name's Sanjay Patel, and I currently hold an honorary Master's degree in the field of Computer Science. I am aware of, and have personal knowledge related to your question. There are computer maintenance businesses which are probably in your area, however they come at the cost of hiring a professional to enter your home. There may also be some local destinations where you can drop off your computer and wait to have a technician look at it. These options can often be costly, and pretty inconvenient. The answer to this question can probably be found doing a little extra research on Google.

A well-running computer can be a hard thing to maintain. From my experience, there is but only One software which is reputable- and consistently reliable for healing sick, slow computers. Reimage™ is a world-renown, easy to use software designed by Forensic scientists and made for the average person. This thing will fix literally just about ANY problem you could possibly be having with your PC. Reimage was recommended to me by a Professor during my 2nd year of Graduate school.

David,

This is Mike from Norton Support.

It appears that you have other real-time security applications installed, such as Super Antispyware, sophois and hitmanpro. The rules of thumb is that you should never have more than one real-time security application installed, such as Norton internet Security, as having multiple security applications can cause conflicts, eats resources and cause your computer to be at risk for infection.

I would strongly advise you to remove the other security applications and also make sure you are using the latest version of Norton Internet Security which is the 2011 version. You can update for free with a valid subscription by visiting http://updatecenter.norton.com/

After you update, restart your computer in Safe Mode and complete a Full System Scan with Norton to check for deeper infections.

Thanks

Mike

Chances are that your computer is infected with a pretty sneaky virus.

Turn your computer off and keep pressing F2 or F12 depending on your computer. (Till you see start windows in safe mode.)

Run computer in safe mode with no internet connection. (Best to just unplug your internet cable or rounter.)

Now go onto a computer thats not affected and download a antivirus program that is listed (Go to Top Antivirus Software in homepage.)

Take a flash drive (can buy at most major stores (Best buy, Walmart, Radio Shack, ect.) for like $5+ (only need 512mb on if can get or 1Gb) Take the flash drive and plug it into the non-affected computer and put the software on there. Then take the flash drive and put it into the affected computer and install the antivirus system and run the full scan if can.

If you cannot still run or install it onto the computer then press Ctr+Alt+Delete and task manger should pop up. When task manager pops up look at procces and see if there is any weird names running and i mean like really wacky names like Ex: gggpopkiller, sdkfjfdskf, vvvvvvvvv, and make sure it dosnt say system under user name.

If you see one then delete it and when you do try the antivirus again.

I would recommended useing a flash drive antivirus when doing the scam in safe mode Like:

Ehm..

The first thing to do to speed up pc and get rid of malwares and viruses is cleaning the registry with a program like CCLeaner http://bitly.com/UrASDs

It's a very good program and easy to use.

Good Bye
