Ok, first of all, i'm no computer expert, i'm a historian so if the solution is obvious and i haven't seen it, do forgive me. The problem is thus: we have an 8mb broadband connection here which on every other computer in the house is producing a result of somewhere in the region of 3-5mb, however on my own laptop it's producing more like 100-200kb, even with all other computers disconnected from the network, which is obviously making streaming or any higher end functions nearly impossible. I've run a virus check with kaspersky which has drawn a blank, so i'm stuck for ideas, any help would be appreciated

What OS are you using? Mac, Windows or linux.

Either way try updating your wireless drivers, and closing down unessesary bandwidth hogging programs.

Sit closer to the wireless hub.

Try plugging your laptop into your router and see if that improves it, if it does it's a wireless problem.

How are you receiving internet to your laptop? Is it in WiFi? Typically a wired computer will be faster than a wireless one, and if you are far away from the router or there is radio interference, that can cause connection speeds to be erratic and slow.

If you havent already, try hooking the laptop up with an ethernet cable, if that solves it then you know it is a wireless problem, which could be a variety of things, like if you use a usb dongle to receive internet, it could be slow and outdated, or if it is built in it could be faulty.

If it is still slow on a wired connection, it is a bit more of a mystery. Get back to me after you have tried this.

Hi There

It is very doubtful that you will achieve the full 8mb especially when multiple computers are sharing the same connection.

As for the slow wireless speed. How good is the wireless signal on the wireless laptop? What type of wireless card is in the laptop b / g / n? You will only transfer data from router to laptop as fast as the card can support.

Try changing the broadcast channel for wifi on your router.

You don't give much info like OS. brand etc. so this is guess work.Assuming you are talking about being on line using IE. go to tools>internet options>Advanced>then do both restore adv. settings & reset ;1 at a time ( restart req'd. Then download www.malwarebytes.org

Update & run that.. If this don't help I would do a defrag. good luck'

you could also go to tools then manage add ons; uncheck them all turn them back on 1 at a time & you can tell which one may be slowing you down
