Question:
No Internet Access Using Wireless Router Or Hard Wire Connection?

I have been very frustrated trying to work to get Internet access. I keep getting error "Media Disconnected" can't contact DHCP Server. I have even set the Internet Protocal (TCP/IP) under properties as obtain an IP adress automatically and obtain DNS server address automatically. I even went so far as just turning off the power to the NETGEAR wireless router and doing a hardware connect from the Surfbound Motorola using the Ethernet connection of the modem directly to the laptop's ethernet. I still am not able to have Internet access. I reset my NetGear WGT624 numerous times, but have no Internet access.

What recommendations do you have?

Sounds like the network connection from the computer to the router is poorly. With everything switched on and plugged in check your network connections and see if it says your LAN is connected, I bet it doesn't and you can then try right clicking and select repair. Fingers crossed, it might get you going.

Does seem that Your suff board modem has the same ip address as your router .

when your pluged in to the SB what ip address do you get .

How to get ip address

XP:start/run/ type in CMD press enter

Vista : start // start search// type CMD // right click on the cmd icon and select run as admin //

in the black screen type in IPCONFIG

wright down the ip address

Then connect your computer to the Netgear router only (NOT CONNECTED TO YOUR MODEM) and do the same

if both default gateways are the same

thats why ur not able to use the connection

and since ur on the Netgear router

Log in to it and im not to fermiler where the actual Ip address of the router is on the net gear but when you find it try this

ip address of router default should be 192.168.1.1 change it to something like 192.168.13.1 thjat way the modem and the rotuer dont have the same ip address then after that

connect the modem to the router then configure the router to get the connection thought the modem

Hopefully that works for you

I just went through two days of this hell after a lightning strike. First, make sure your cable modem, you do have a cable modem I hope, is plugged in and turned on. You should have 4 green lights, power, ready, input, send. Connect a cat5 patch cable between your laptop or PC directly to the cable modem. Turn on the laptop/PC. You should now have one yellow light on the cable modem. If so, you should be able to open your browser and get to the net. If not, try this.

Goto Start, then Run (Start, Start Search, Type CMD for Vista). Type in CMD or if its not found Command and click Run. This should open a dos command window. Type in IPCONFIG/RESET_ALL and enter. Next type in IPCONFIG/RELEASE_ALL and enter. Now shut down the laptop.PC completely. Restart the laptop/PC. You should not have an amber light and four greens. If you still get the error that Media Is Disconnected or Internet Cable is Disconnected then your NIC card is shot and will need to be replaced. If this did get you on line, then shut down the laptop/PC and press the standby button on your cable modem and wait until only one amber standby light is lit. Disconnect the cat5 cable coming from your laptop/PC, and plug it into one of the ports on your Router/Switch. Install a cat5 Patch cable to connect the Cable Modem to the Inernet port on the Router/Switch. Press the standby button on your cable modem and wait intil you get the four green lights. Then power on your laptop/PC and you should get a green light on the Router/Switch for the port you have the laptop/PC connected to. If so you should be able to get online. You may have to do that IPCONFIG reset for ALL PC's you have as you connect them, especially if your installing a new Router/Switch.

PS: Make sure you have everything in your browser set to defaults. Make sure the Internet Properties (Control Panel/Internet Properties/Connections/Lan Settings) are set to Automatically Detect Settings and NO other options are checked. Have the TCP/IP set to Obtain IP Address Automatically.

Since it looks like there aren't many people responding to your question very quickly, I'll throw in my two cents, for what it's worth.. (perhaps two cents). Since I don't know your network, and since I'm really the hands on type, I might not be at all helpful, but I'm thinking along the lines of configuring the connections you use for specific purposes to restrict certain types of access. For instance, the NIC that takes the physical connection (for Point of Sale) should be configured in such a way (via the firewall) that prohibits web server traffic. Have you verified the network settings on each connection? Sorry I'm not more helpful.. I have to start talking to get the wheels turning, so If i come up with anything better, I'll add to this.

turn off everything

wait 1 minute

then power on 1 by 1

starting from the cable modem

after you see that the online light is green (steady green)

connect the ethernet cable from motorolla surfboard to your laptop

and turn it on

wait till the LAN light is on (steady green & not blinking)

Possiblity 1

if the light does not turn steady green

then change the cable and restart your computer

otherwise try to browse the internet

Possibility 2

the light does trun steady green but you are still not able to surf the net

here is what you need to do in this case

rebuilt TCP/IP stack and winsock and winsock 2

Click Yes to confirm file delete.

Click the Winsock2 key. On the Edit menu, click Delete.

Click Yes to confirm file delete, and then close the Registry Editor window.

Uninstall and Reinstall TCP/IP

Click on Start

Click on Settings

Click Control Panel

Double click on the Network Connections folder

Right-click on Local Area Connection and the Left-click on Properties

On the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box click on Internet Protocol [TCP/IP] and then click on the install button.

Highlight protocol

click add

click on have disk

type c:\windows\inf

click ok

select TCP/IP and click ok

this will reinstall TCP / IP

now exit out by clicking ok

and restart your computer

this way you will be able to determine 4 things

the NIC on your laptop is working correctly

the Network cable is ok

the modem is working fine

and the ISP is not down.

if you are able to surf then the next step is to add the wireless router to your network

turn off everything

disconnect the LAN cable from your computer and connect it to the wirless router

turn on the Cable modem

wait for the online light to turn green

turn on the wirless router

wait 1 minute

now try to establish the wireless session with your laptop
