Can i run an ftp server off of ubuntu linux or do i have to have an os specifically for servers?

I want to set up an ftp server that can be accessed across the internet and im running ubuntu 11.04. Do i need to partition my hard drive and install a server os on it to set up an ftp server?

You can just install the ftp software.



There is no significant difference between a ubuntu desktop and ubuntu server operating system, except that the server OS has no GUI installed.

Sure. The FTP server will be already installed. The easiest way to get it up and running is generally to uncomment the appropriate line in inetd.conf. You don't need the FTP server running continuously unless you are expecting a lot of traffic. If you want to set up anonymous ftp you'll also need an "ftp" user listed in /etc/passwd. Man ftpd for full details.

You can totally run ftp server on ubuntu, I'm running one on a debian system. ^_^

in case you have used Linux till now and are mushy with a undeniable distro, that distro may well be your suited decision. So in case you have used pink Hat (or Fedora) and have learnt their way of doing issues, choose for RHEL. once you're someone of SUSE (SLED or openSUSE) then their server version could be your suited decision. even even with the undeniable fact that, in case you rather have no decision, then i'm unsure what to propose previous using the main modern version of whichever you opt for for.
