Here is what I do to download Linux:
1. Start Computer
2. Press F12
3. Choose to boot off of CD ROM DRIVE
4. Linux starts
5. I wait a little while, while it looks like it downloads it onto my computer.
6. Linux desktop pops up.
7. Shut off computer
8. Computer acts like I didn't download Linux at all. ?

Is there any way I can fix this? I don't think there is any thing wrong with the perma. disc drive, but I think I'm going some thing wrong. Am I supposed to boot the disc? If I don't do that it won't do any thing at all. Please help!

Because you didn't install Linux. You've got it on that disk, you booted off the disk and it ran, but this has nothing to do with being installed on your computer. You didn't say which version of Linux this is, so I'll presume Ubuntu since it's the most popular live-disk distro. Once you boot the disk and get to the desktop, there should be an Install Ubuntu icon... that will put all the files on the hard drive and set it to boot into Linux. The installer tool will let you format the hard drive so if you have a corrupt OS on there already you can remove it.

If you're using some other distribution, then other means of getting it on there work. What I'd do if it were me there would be to use the bootable disk to download another distro (OpenSUSE 12.1) to the hard drive then use the tools to create an installation disk, then boot the installation disk and install Linux properly (wiping the hard drive first of course). But that's just me, Ubuntu suits most people nicely.

Go here to see Linux install (it's identical to Mint):

A possible problem is the hard drive.

If it's sector(s) have become damaged (which happens a lot) then the install (just like the non-functional OS) will hit a brick wall.

Advise you get a fresh/new hard drive> install it> install Linux.

When desktop arrives, you are running into live environment.

You need to install Linux on Hard disk to boot into it.

There should be some icon on Desktop for installation. If not consult manuals from its website.

no no what you did was the start a linux live cd (basicly it uses your cd as the harddrive and just runs the OS stright of it)

you should boot with the disk and when your up and running there should be a icon or something like that somewhere that you want to actelly install it.
