it all started this weekend when i hooked up a new linksys wireless router, but we have also had a storm and bad weather all weekend and it is still raining now. (not sure if that would matter or not) Ive made 4 calls to charter so far and they just have me reboot the router and it works, but only for a couple hours then the connection is lost again. Any help anyone could give would be greatly appreciated because I have online classes to complete! Thanks in advance.

You say "reboot the cable modem" but your question says "reboot the router". Which is it? You should not have to reboot your router. If it is losing syc to the cable modem, you should be able to see it in the LEDs. If the rebooting only the router fixes it, then you have something wrong with the router, not the cable modem, and you should direct connect to the modem and restart the modem.

Update: Yes, the cable modem. Then you should look at the LED lights, notice what it looks like when it is working and when it is failing. When it is failing, it will flicker or blink at a certain rate. That is when it either has lost signal or signal is too low. Do you have digital TV? Is that flakey? The ISP SHOULD be able to get on the modem and give you a signal status. If the signal is low, you might have unterminated taps that are bringing the signal down.

I've gotten on my Digital TV controller and got the signal levels. I haven't tried to get on cable modem since it seems to work.

Hi,

It clearly indicates that you have intermittent sync issue. Now we have to find out why your router is not getting steady and strong signal.

1. As you mentioned, weather could be a major reason. Becouse of bad weather condition, router will not be able to get sync continuously. You need to contact ur ISP providor and raise ticket. If the problem with undergroung cable and DP, ISP can fix the issue.

2. Kindly note that providor can not give you any gurantee on extension cable or socket. So you have to connect directly to the main socket with help of micro filter.

3. You did not mention that how you connected router to computer. is it with cable or wirelessly ?. I guess that the connection in wirelessly. however, it must that you monitor the connection when you connect with cable to router and the computer. You should contat the ISP if the problem persists.

4. Before contacting them, please check below listed,

A. Microfilter in-use is not faulty. It is very important that to ensure the status of microfilter. If it is very old, then I will recommend to you that please swap the micro filter with alternate one. then connect directly to the main socket.

B. Ensure that Greay ADSL cable connected securely to the filter and router.

C. Do not keep any electronic diveces which interfence the siganls close to your router. Devices such as cordless phone's base stations, microwave, radio, game console, play station, xbox, speakers, set top box, etc.

C. How many telephone sockets are in use ? do u have microfilters connected with all the sockets in use ? Remove all the telephonic socket and try to sync the router. It works most of the time. It indicates that there is some problem with internal wiring.

D. you can get ride off with this problem, if you change the default settings into advanced level.

Change DSL settings. MTU : 1432, modulation type /mode: G.dmt.

Enable UPnP and multi steamcast if you are using any other wireless diveces such as play station, xbox, wireless printer, etc

If you connected wirelessly, change the channel into 11. Channel 8 & 9 is also relaiable. now save settings and log out from the router configuration page.

If you are technically not good, then you can call up the tech support to get help to change the settings.

Find out where the fault lies and fix the issue. I am sure that your problem will be rectified once your change the router settings to advanced level. Also make sure that you are connected the router dirctly to the main socket with microfilter.

Please call tech support and tag a complaint ticket if you are still facing the same problem

Let me know if you have any question

many thanks

Are you connecting to the router wirelessly? Did you make sure to set up encryption with a key that nobody else knows?

Are you sure you connected the cable modem to the router's Internet/WAN port? Do not connect the modem to a LAN port.

Weather can affect your internet connection from your ISP. so try to call your ISP and ask them if they're have a maintenance. and try to check your router settings.
