I think you're actually going to need a rollover cable to connect to your com port on your PC then to the console port on the router. At least that's how I've always interfaced with routers. Then you can use Hyperterminal. I've never worked with a 1700 series though....they may be different as the first poster says.

But...then you have to know the commands to set the router up, and that will depend on how your network is setup.

This site has a quick and dirty explanation of configuration

If you have additional questions...feel free to ask - I'm available on IM.

These answers are correct somewhat. You will need to configure the router through the console port. If you don't have a console cable go on www.ebay.com and search for cisco console. After you obtain a cisco console cable you need to connect the DB-9 end to a serial port on your computer. If you don't have a serial port search google for USB to serial and you can purchase an adapter. Then connect the RJ-45(big telephone) plug into the console port on the router. It will be obvious which end is which. You need to use a serial interface I recommend teraterm. Just google teraterm you can download it and it's free to use. You need to figure out which port you are on COM1 or COM2...try both if you don't know. You need to setup the port for 9600 baud 8 data bits no parity and 1 stop bit no flow control. This setup is commonly referred to as 9600 8n1. Please keep in mind there is a learning curve with setting up a router. If this is a T1 you will need a T1 card or a serial interface with an external DSU. I would recommend purchasing a WIC-1DSU card. You can find them on Ebay. If you are going to use it for broadband...i.e. Cable/DSL then you will need to have two ethernet interfaces. You can purchase a second ethernet interface card on Ebay...search WIC-1ENET. You can download the Cisco IOS 12.2 command reference from here...

That will tell you all the commands on the router and what they do. If you are on DSL you will probably need to configure the router for DHCP and PPPoE. It isn't that difficult please let me know more about your setup and I can guide you to the right configuration options....bpate@spacc.biz

Old school router. The OS wont matter. The great thing about cisco routers is the CLI-IOS. You need to plug a straight-through cable in the console port. Then hyperterimal in. From there GOOD LUCK!.

well it depends on what you want to do exactly first you will need to get into privileged exec mode by typing enable then global configuration by typing configure terminal then go to an interface by typing interface fastethernet0/0 put an ip address on that interface by typing ip address x.x.x.x y.y.y.y x will be ip and y will be subnet mask
