I remember reading about a Linux OS/ distro that is like a router firewall that you can put between your computer and the internet.

This can be installed on a regular computer.

What are my choices.

There is smoothwall, though I recommend that you give pfSense a try http://www.pfsense.org/

pfSense is a BSD based distro, though it has more features than any of the basic Linux Based Firewalls such as ClearOS, Smoothwall, EnGarde Secure Linux. You could also try IPcop and Untangle Gateway which I hear are also very good.

I was also looking into these, and some require you to pay for services. Though you get a basic setup for free, the advanced features require that you are a member (from what I could tell, this included ClearOS, Smoothwall, EnGarde Secure Linux, & Untangle Gateway., IPcop I am not too sure of).

IP Cop was always a favorite, It's also a complete waste of time. Routers do the same thing.
