802.11ac is backwards compatible, so if you get and AC router all your devices should work with it. They just won't get increased bandwidth provided by AC.



As for an upgrade, its actually both software and hardware. In order to use the AC capabilities the client (your laptop, phone, etc) and your router must have 802.11ac hardware and software. If your client only supports 802.11g, you AC router will fall back to using 802.11g for that connection (though I'm sure exactly how the works in 802.11ac).

Like most WIFI upgrades, all AC routers will support the older /b/g/n.



A/C is in the 5GHZ range, so olders APs will probably need to be replaced (I think some have swappable cards) but this is for Enterprise stuff. Your home grade routers is not upgradeable.

most new routers allow for this by providing TWO SSID's one for NEW and one for OLD.



They usually call it GUEST.
