Question:
Why can't I successfully forward a port on my router?

I am trying to get a game to work. However it needs a specific TCP Port to be open. I go to my router and forward port 2213 to my internal IP Address. Save, and enable. Then I open the same port on my Windows firewall. When I check the port with an online scanner, it says it's stealthed.

I then try to drop the firewall on the router and my computer and try again. It's still stealthed.

What else can I try? I've tried configuring a different port to see if it's the internet provider that is blocking the port, and it still doesn't work. I've even tried entering my computer as a DMZ, with no luck.

My friend is having the exact same problem with his setup. We both have different Internet providers (Comcast & Roadrunner) and different Routers (Belkin and Linksys).

I'm out of ideas and completely stumped. :)

what kind of antivirus do you have? if you have norton or mcafee they will be blocking the port, and you need to mess around with the configuration to enable port forwarding on port 2213. do a google search for "anti-virus name + ports" and you should get some results. your ISP would not block ports, because that is a local connection. the only thing your internet service provider can really do is limit your bandwith. and make sure you have a static ip, someone else above me posted a link to a great site with step by step photo instructions on how to do this.

what test are you using to define if a port is open closed or stealthed?

A port could be open and forwarding correctly but certain tests will return this as stealthed if the game/application that should be listening on that port is not running.opening a port is not the whole story, you must also have an application/service listening on that port.

For example I could open port 80 on my routers firewall and setup forwarding to my desktop pc but if i dont have a webserver listening on port 80 i will get a stealthed/closed message from GRC for example.

Make sure the IP address you're forwarding it to is static.
