The IP address is a number that identifies a computer or other device connected to the Internet. Every device on the Internet requires a UNIQUE IP address. Networking software uses IP addresses to send or receive information to and from the correct computers. The IP address of the computer running google.com, for instance, is 66.249.92.104. Try typing that into your address bar.
In order to really understand subnet masks, you'd need to understand boolean logic and binary numbers, but basically the subnet mask tells your computer how to work out when an IP address is in your network, in when it's not.

hi,
Ip-Address
An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a numerical label that is assigned to devices participating in a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication between its nodes. An IP address serves two principal functions: host or network interface identification and location addressing. Its role has been characterized as follows: "A name indicates what we seek. An address indicates where it is. A route indicates how to get there."
Subnet Mask
A subnetwork, or subnet, is a logically visible, distinctly addressed part of a single Internet Protocol network.[1][2] The process of subnetting is the division of a computer network into groups of computers that have a common, designated IP address routing prefix.
Gate Way:
A gateway may contain devices such as protocol translators, impedance matching devices, rate converters, fault isolators, or signal translators as necessary to provide system interoperability. It also requires the establishment of mutually acceptable administrative procedures between both networks.

to put it mildly its this....when you order internet service ...like hi speed thru you Cable Company you will recieve a device to help you get omn the internet called a Modem- this device connects you to the internet..
your computer becomes a part aof a larger network computers called a LAN- then to surf the4 internet...itunes.com...google.com your now networked and a part of a largen networjk called a WAN
tyhe IP address links your computer to these networks..the gasteway is the modem that your connected to.....the subnet mask tells what type of classs of network your on
0-128...class A 128-191...classs B 192- 201.... class C each class of networks is represented by the ip address assigned to your modem ....thats how you get hi speed internet
