2009-08-04 10:10:32 UTC
Hi guys!

I have a 2WIRE modem. I have telus. A while ago I had a Limited or No Connectivity problem. I couldn't change my space in Hotmail or login on my Windows Live Messenger. It was terrible. But now I have a different problem. I used something off YouTube. It said to make a .bat file using notepad. I copied and pasted this into notepad and double clicked on it:

echo ipconfig/flushdns
ipconfig/flushdns
echo ipconfig/release
ipconfig/release
echo ipconfig/renew
ipconfig/renew
exit

ever since that, Ive been having "Not Connected". Internet Explorer works, Google Chrome doesn't. Neither does Mozilla Firefox. I contacted Telus asking them whats going on. They said ur computer has a virus or something get it checked at Future Shop. The problem is the nearest future Shop is over 100km away! I still can't use Hotmail spaces, hotmail profiles, or Windows Live messenger.
Please Help!

PS: I bought my computer a few years ago, its not that old.

Heres my system info:

System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Registered to:
Toshiba

Let's start at the top and work our way through all this

The BAT file

What that .bat file was supposed to do is clean out your DNS servers from memory and release and renew your IP address from your modem

Depending on how you typed it in the commands, all kinds of things could have happened, so we are going to start with a clean slate. Delete the bat file you created

Turn off your modem

reboot your machine

once the machine has rebooted, restart your modem

You should get a pop up once your modem restarts that your network is connected

Double click on the network icon

click on the support tab

click on details

Do you have an IP address?

Do you have DNS Servers shown?

If you do, you should be able to connect to the Internet

If not - Close the text window

Click the repair button - see if you can surf now

If not - Click on the General Tab

Click on properties

Highlight Internet Protocol

Click Properties

Make sure that You have

Obtain IP address automatically selected

Obtain DNS Servers automatically selected

If all that is set, and you still do not see DNS servers or an IP address in the details pop-up, have your ISP re-provision your modem

Good Luck

If I had this problem, I would press and hold the reset switch for a good 30 seconds. Then reboot the computer while the router is coming back online.

Limited Connectivity means you're not getting a good signal. When you did a /release, it purged all your DHCP info (which it gets from your router). Generally you wont need to do a /renew, because it'll usually do that autmatically when you boot Windows

Find out if you have a connection to your router. Start --> Run --> "cmd" [Enter] then type ipconfig [enter] - see if you have an IP address for Default Gateway. If so, you're connected to your router. If not, there's a host of other possible problems that someone else here may be able to answer.

Hello Dude, You probably have a form of spyware/malware (which will cause the same problems that you are mention here) the corpit probably were the bat file that you download as that is how most viruses and spyware are spread. You have to be very careful of the things (files) that you download (weather from a friend or a website) as some programs come bundle with either viruses or spyware/malware. Never download or install anytghing unless you know that it came from a safe site or that you scan it first ok. Here is what you can try first. You need to un-install windows live, hotmail, and any other program that you installed that you are having problems with right now, after you un-install all then you need to run a scan with your spyware and your antivirus programs, if you don't have a spyware program then here is one that I use and it does a very good job of keeping spyware/malware under control. (http://www.malwarebytes.org) and it is free, here is another one (http://www.superantispyware.com) both are very good. After you install run a full scan right away, after the scanning finish then run a full scan with your antivirus program, after all has finish (antivirus and spyware program) then re-install all programs that you had (except the program that you install from u-tube) make sure to uninstall that first ok. If you ever want to try a program out always go to cnet download.com as that is a safe site to dowwnload a program from ok. Now connection is another problem all in itself, I had a problem with my router at first, I had to call netgear to get it all work out, now that is probably what you need to do as most time that is cause either from your internet service provider or the router in itself. I hope that this information helps out. Good Luck

Sounds like you might have a pirated copy of Windows XP. Microsoft introduced some new "features" with sp3...lol...Good luck...:)

P.S. You can try uninstalling sp3 or reinstall windows and don't install sp3.
