Linux is the Kernel. All Linux Distros. (Distributions) including Ubuntu are built upon the Linux Kernel

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_kernel

Here are some options for installing or trying out Linux

Option One (Full installation)

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 8 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 8 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

Option Two (Install Ubuntu inside Windows XP and Vista)

Installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows without partitioning

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wubi

You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the Wubi installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Ubuntu (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Ubuntu is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Ubuntu

Yes a big difference and they are definitely not the same thing, although the recent hype about Ubuntu during the last few years has perhaps made it appear that way to newcomers - which pains me greatly

Ubuntu is just one variant, based on the long established Debian distribution - or 'distro' as they are commonly called. It somehow takes credit for bringing user friendliness to Linux, but it existed long before Ubuntu was even thought of. And the real difference between Ubuntu and the dozens of other 'distros' is a millionaire backer who knows how to manipulate the media IMO.

I wouldn't mind if Ubuntu bought anything new to the table, but it's just another Debian clone that's no better or worse than all the other Debian clones. In the my distro is better than yours rants, that abound all over the internet, there was one I found particularly amusing from an Ubuntu die hard.

His claim, was that Ubuntu is superior because their user forums answer more questions than any other! To me, that means there are more people with problems than any other, so it proves just the opposite.

Ubuntu is a distribution. Linux is totally a kernel not something greater, not something much less. Linux isn't an working equipment. Ubuntu is. Why? A kernel components the main hardship-loose areas of an OS yet you nonetheless need someone-land of a few form around it, and that's precisely what something like Ubuntu components, someone-land. To be greater particular a userland typicallys is composed of executable data that easily do something with the learning you supply it, and that they in turn interface with the kernel. every person that tells you someone-land and not employing a window supervisor (KDE, Gnome etc..) is an fool. there are an excellent form of server distro's that could beg in yet in a diverse way. there is even one in each and every of Ubuntu that works somewhat properly. Linux became into in simple terms one adult males thank you to create a loose version of Unix. there is likewise BSD that's approximately as close to to the unique Unix you may get now, devoid of easily working Unix of direction.... I advise helpful equipment-V nonetheless lives on with sunlight (now Oracle) with the aid of Solaris, yet the way it runs it incredibly sounds like somebody rather screwed it up. this is totally sluggish in comparison to maximum BSD based distro's, and sounds like Winblows 3.a million in comparison to maximum Linux based distro's.
