My gf lives in a shared house with the internet but know one can pick up the wireless signal. The router is 20meters away cause of where the phone connection is and it isnt possible to move it closer. Is there any way I can booster the wireless signal so that every one in the rooms up stairs can pick it up?? I tried using a 25M telephone cable to move the router closer but that didnt work. The longer the range the better! Can I plug some thing by usb in to my g/fs laptop to boost the signal range?

buy a wireless n router - the signal is 10 to 20 times stronger you can also buy wireless n adaptors for your pc's

If you have a solid ADSL connection from the telephone line to the router, you might try Home adaptors, you can buy them in pairs with a couple of patch leads. Home adaptors transfer the Data signal from the telephone line to the 13 amp ring main. Just plug one into a 13amp socket near the router, plug a patch lead (Ethernet lead) from the Adaptor to the Router, then plug an adaptor into a 13 amp socket on the same ring main and a patch lead from the 2nd adaptor into the PC/Laptop and Bingo!

REMEMBER, Telephone Extension points cause your Broadband service to slow down and in many cases drop out, even if you are plugging your router into the main telephone socket. You must modify your telephone points so that they work efficiently on a 2 core connection throughout the telephone line circuit.

My answer is similal to Dave B but more flexible

The most reliable way would be to get some powerline extenders. - these use mains wiring instead of a long ethernet cable. You plug an ethernet powerline adapter into one of the ethernet ports on the router and into a local mains socket and a wifi powerline adapter in to mains socket in the middle of the house. this extends the wifi network to another part of the house so everyone can have wifi access

The other way would be to use a wireless repeater but these tend to be specific same brands of router
