I asked the following question

have set up a router so that i can work wirelessly on a laptop. The wired connection works well on desktop PC when laptop is off and laptop wirless works well but will not allow desctop PC to connect at same time.

MSN messenger kind of works just on the wired PC while the laptop is connected so it it a case of not enough speed or bandwidthn or is there a setting i can change

and got the following reply

The problem is probably confilicting IP addresses. If you set your network connection to get an automatic local IP that might cause problems, the safest solution is you assign a manual (and different) IP address for each PC, this way you can avoid conflicts.

HOW DO I DO THIS

Thanks

DHCP on the router should assign a different IP address to each one. However, if you prefer a static IP address you can set this either on the router, where you will be able to specify an IP address for a given MAC address or on your PC.

On the PC go to network connections and open the properties for the connection. Look for the TCP/IP adapter and view the properties. The PC is probably set to automatically get an IP address. If so, uncheck the box and enter a manual address. Probably starting 192.168.0. or 192.168.1.

Repeat on the laptop.

However, I would first check to see if this is actually the problem.

On both laptop and PC, open a command window and type ipconfig

This will show the IP address allocated to each. If they are the same then that is the problem.
