Question:
Having problems with NETGEAR 2.0 USB adapter, little help?
?

I have looked at other answers but could not find a specific one to my issue. I bought a USB 108 Mbps wireless USB 2.0 adaptor from NETGEAR. I currently have my own wireless network with a LINKSYS wireless router. I plugged in the adaptor to a computer and attempted to link into my router. I entered all my passphrase codes. The software from NETGEAR does indeed capture the signal, but I get the little warning from XP saying "The connection has limited or no connectivity. You might not be able to access the internet or some network resources. The problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer". When I try to 'repair' the connection it attempts to 'renew my IP address". After a minute I get the warning saying it could not renew the IP address. I am currently running Windows XP.

Little help?

What your are getting is an address know as Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA).

169.254.0.0-169.254.255.255

This occurs when you can't link with the DHCP Server in the router.

The fact that you say it is 108 MHz tells me you have an "N" type of adapter. If the Linksys Router is not an "N" type router, then it is up to the Netgear Adapter to auto-baud down to the "G" type speed.

Another major problem is if you used the Netgear installation disk and it installed its communications over Windows XP.

Take out that software and just use Windows XP's communications software. This is the one area Microsoft excels in.

For the adapter's driver install it like any other hardware and point the hardware installation program to the CD for the driver.

Try these for now. There are many other things you can try if these don't work.

There are few possible issues:-

1. You typed wrong wireless security key when tried to connect. Double check it by checking in the configuration pages of the Linksys router.

2. Delete already existing wireless profile in the computer. And then try to connect. If the wireless profile in computer does not match with the one according to the router(SSID or wireless name and security), it wont connect

3. Firewall setting. Create an exception for ur network in the firewall.

4. Make sure there are no cordless phone or microwave oven which can cause interference.

5. Reconfigure the router with new wireless settings and try to connect

You need to set an IP address for your wireless adapter.

It sounds like your router is not assigning an address (which is known as DHCP)

Your help files for the router or the wireless adapter should guide you in the right direction.

it sounds too me that if that happens you are not close enough to the wire-less internert (linkskys box), thats what happened to me i just moved the bok so that its right next to my computer. because some internet outputs (internet boxes) have 3 levels of out put, there is one type that only sends a signal out into the same room is it, there is one that only does like the top floor of your house and theres one that does every area of your proerty, i can guarantee if you move your router (linkskys box) right next to your computer or your computer next to your router (linksys box) it will work.
