Hi am using Bittorrent program but am having a little bit of a problem.I dont know which port to enter so i can allow traffic and download torrents. Is there anyway i can find out which ports are open without going into the router?

By the way i've already tried the netstat command and i didn't know which port to choose from it because there were alot of ports but i tried some ports and all of them were closed.

There is a program called ScanPort from Roadkil.net that does this job quickly and easily. I use it myself; very helpful.

You do not need to find an open port, you need to open a port for Bittorrent.

A port within the 49152-65534 range is suggested to avoid ISP blocks and possible conflicts.

After you choose the port, then you need to forward it through your software firewall and (if you have one) router.

This guide is on uTorrent, but if you have Bittorrent 6.0.3, it is exactly the same as uTorrent, so the guide should help. It has links to guides for firewalls and routers as well as other tips to set up your client properly.

I love the ScanPort program the previous person answered with!

I understand that you can forward your ports and all, and I've tried it once before... but... o...m...g... that's plenty of nerve-wracking work!

That ScanPort program was extremely easy! Avast! virus scanner said it was cleaned, I unzipped it, I ran it, I entered in a series of ports (52,000 through 59,000), and it returned which ports were open in that range!

I then tested 3 different ports with Vuze (Azureus) instead of guessing one out of nearly 8,000 ports! Who wants to do that? Who wants to forward their ports!?

Try this. I don't know a program that will test all your ports to see which ones are open, but this one will tell you if it's open once you enter the number.
