Hello,

I am faced with a daunting task that I must forward a port and while I have no idea what that means I do understand the guides that are everywhere online. Unfortunately I have no router which seems to be needed. My internet goes from my computer via a cable into the wall and I have no idea how to know then what a possible router may be called. Does anyone know how to find out? Or how to open post anyway?

Thanks

Here I am with your BEST answer...

VPN on the computer you want to PORT FORWARD would work depending on what service your trying to host.

Port Forwarding lets your Router Accept unknown/unrequested packets from any outside connection trying to reach a particular port on your network... which is pointed to a System.

If you have no access to the router, you cant Port Forward.

But you can still make that port accessible to the outside world via a System-VPN service...

Teamviewer http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx has a VPN Server that can connect you to a network... once you reach the network, you can access that port.

Flaw is you will have to connect to that network...

And is a Very Big Security risk on that network... But it is a solution to your problem... depending on what your trying to connect to... as that's the reason you Open Ports.

short answer and very complicated answer is to create vmware host with dns server (set forwarding). create virtual adapater and tie to nat adapater. basically all traffic you recieve is passed through you're pc as a router and forwarded to the virtual machine. it works the other way around when you configure one of the https ports 443,8443,80. you then have to create a loopback adapter on your local machine and route to virtual, so all data goes from your pc (set server dns to primary) to virtual out through http port that is open by default if anyone is using a web browser (configured in shared vm, used for rdp can assign port there). it likely that you dont have someone monitering ports, but if you did you could mask ports in vmare. host port would show something like 9999 but go through port 443. prob possible to create another loopback on vmware to funnel back to your local machine.

Without a router there's no need to port forward in the traditional sense as you are directly connected to the internet. Virtually all modern operating systems have a built in firewall and that firewall is what is blocking the port. Many anti-virus and anti-malware applications also have a built in firewall that is either integrated with the built-in firewall or is layered on top of it.

With this in mind, you need to access the firewall application on your machine -- its usually in the Administrative Tools section -- and open the port that is being blocked.

If you don't have a router, or don't have access to the router, then you cant do any port forwarding.
