FTP or file transfer protocol is a commonly used protocol for exchanging files over any network that supports the TCP/IP protocol (such as the Internet or an intranet). There are two computers involved in an FTP transfer: a server and a client. The FTP server, running FTP server software, listens on the network for connection requests from other computers. The client computer, running FTP client software, initiates a connection to the server. Once connected, the client can do a number of file manipulation operations such as uploading files to the server, download files from the server, rename or delete files on the server and so on. Any software company or individual programmer is able to create FTP server or client software because the protocol is an open standard. Virtually every computer platform supports the FTP protocol. This allows any computer connected to a TCP/IP based network to manipulate files on another computer on that network regardless of which operating systems are involved (if the computers permit FTP access). There are many existing FTP client and server programs, and many of these are free.

Are you sure it's asking for information about your server? Or asking for login information for a remote ftp server?

Typically, for public ftp servers you can log in as anonymous, and use your email address for the password. Most software, like browsers, that will handle ftp will do this part for you automatically.

If you're trying to upload some html files to a web hosting place, you would have to check their procedures for sending.

A number of things to be taken into consideration.

FTP is mostly needed when uploading bigger files to a server.

The same thing can be accomplished much easier by using I.E. or Netscape. In both of these cases you need to have the login information. After that you can transfer via drag and drop from windows explorer (or My Computer).

Sending attachments with email is very easy, as long as you don't exceed the size allowed my either the sending or receiving ISP (Often that is around 5 MB but the size limit is moving up).

When sending attachments, especially of executables, or even some video files, some virus checking programs may delete them as being dangerous. In that case creating a zip file will eliminate the problem.

Finally, the first answer was transferred from a source like Wikepedia (boilerplate), without being necessarily pertinent to your question. In fact if you check the answerer's 'home page' you'll note that he is so sloppy, he even misspelled the name of Nietzsche twice, both his first and last name. Not a good source I would think. ;-)
