wireless laptop adapter not working?

i have this a bit old ibm laptop, it has a usb wireless adapter that i just plug in for wireless internet and also has its installation cd.. i installed using the cd then i plugged the adapter.. the laptop recognized it and when i even open it up from the lower right program area it says that i have a good wireless connection (..picked up from my router)...but the internet still doesn't work.. what did i miss doing?

Well, couple of questions. Is it connecting to YOUR connection? Are you trying to use someone elses wifi router? If it is yours, did you have to enter a KEY?

Click on the wireless connector (the one that says you have a good connection) and "View Available Networks"

Be sure you are connected to the correct SSID (YOURS!) and that you get a valid IP address. If you have encryption it should ask you for the key. Be sure you are using the correct key. If you are using WPA or WEP and still have an issue start by turning off security on the router. See if you connect, if you do then re-enable the security and try connection again. If you have issues you need to update your computers software to allow the correct security.



Since you didn't say which operating system you are using I will also say that....

Some older operating systems don't support all the possible security levels which creates this type issue. You may have to end up using WEP with some of them.

Sometimes you have internet connection but the browser doesn't recognize the default gateway. So to solve that problem you should open Internet Explorer then go to Tools then go to Internet Options then go to Connections then go to LAN settings and then make sure that the Automatically detect settings box is selected if not you should select it, then click apply and ok and then close and open internet explorer again.
