I found an article for you that walks you through how to troubleshoot your Ethernet port problem.

Assuming you are running Windows, you can tell if it is a problem on your computer by verifying that Windows can "see" your port and that the port is up and the driver is working. This is the first step before calling tech support.

After verifying that everything is OK on Windows, the next thing to try is a new Ethernet cable.

If that fails too, it may be a problem with your router/modem. Tech support for your ISP may be able to help you at this point.

IF you have a NIC card and not built in Ethernet you may have just unplugged it while trying to get the video card in ..try seating the card and see if the light comes back on...you may have lost your drivers for the NIC card...you would have to reinstall it. if its built in ..use the utility disc that came with the computer to install drivers or the computer manuf. website. Your ISP can do a loop back on your router to see if that's ok..If it is the Ethernet port built in to your mother board and it did die..you can get a NIC card (network interface card) known as an Ethernet card that fits either a PCI slot or the PCI express x1 slot...install the card and driver and your back in business.

Go to your Control Panel, click on the "system" icon and look at your device manager. See if the Ethernet card is still listed there. If the card is dead, or if you knocked it loose when you were wrestling the new video card in then it won't show up in the list. If it is in the list then you're probably having a port problem. You can do an online search or go to the Microsoft.com website for information on how to adjust port settings.

There are countless reasons for this happening, First have you ever recently as much as date any anti-secret agent ware programs? have you ever as much as date the two working attitude, even automatic updates? something comparable handed off to me the alternative day, it grew to develop into out the router develop into undesirable. It have been packeting the completed enterprise's community and slowing it down. If the condominium complicated which you in basic terms stay in has an IT place of artwork or internet protection approach it is going to have close your port down by way of fact of packet broadcasting. yet thinking the incontrovertible fact that it sort of feels your port is working, your router could have fried. Even in basic terms a water drop can do it. be certain for any cracks or injury to the port. If now no longer, information on your tower/router must be effective in fixing the predicament.
