Question:
Unable to SFTP through a router?

I need to SFTP into a client's website, and it works fine when i bypass the router, and connect my cable modem directly to my computer, but if I have a router in between, it doesn't work.

I tried to google this, but couldn't find any similar problems, hoping someone is familiar with what tweaks I might need to do. I tried opening up my ports, but that didn't work.

SFTP uses port TCP/22 by default. You probably have a firewall enabled on your router. Confirm if TCP/22 is allowed through your router so you can use SFTP.

plug in a network cable first to test that the router is working as it should. Then check that your wireless settings match what the router is expecting, eg. check your encryption method (WEP, WES etc) and check that your wifi settings on your laptop reflect that. Then, check if windows is expecting you to put in the 128-bit key as hex characters (16 characters of 0-9, A-F) or as an alphanumeric password - could be any length then just as a regular password. Finally if everything is as it should then make sure DHCP is enabled on the router and your computer is expecting to be automatically assigned an IP address. If 2 machines try to connect with the same IP address, it won't work properly so DHCP should avoid this issue... Unless of course you manually assign an address allocated for DHCP, then you'll potentially get intermittent failures at some point in the future.

1. he must be using sftp on the matching connection

that will refuse a connection if the protocol is misunderstood

2. There may be a firewall involved

3. FileZilla is sookywater,, try another client preferably a console client where u can implement commands and get better input

and NAT and FTP are kinda sookywater together ,, NAT has to redesign a FTP packets headers if ur ecrypting on a socket layer i think the data is pretty much worthless to the NAT software

As the others said, it's the router. It's most likely blocking port 22. If you know how to log into the router and unblock a port, you're golden. Otherwise, if you post the make and model, I'm sure someone can tell you where to change it.

What SFTP client are you using? Also what make\model of the router?

Make sure you don't have your Windows firewall enabled. That will block the port too.

when your on your router you do a new remote broswer that might help
