my computer rejects any incoming wired connection ... why?

yesterday i noticed the internet connection suddenly not working. it said "a network cable was unplugged" even though the ethernet cable was plugged into the computer like it always is.

so i tried restarting the router, restarting my computer, unplugging the cables, all the standard quick fixes. none of them worked. but what DID work was when i plugged in my roommate's ethernet cable into my computer. i had working internet for about 5 minutes, then it too stopped working. then i switched back to my normal cable. it worked for about 5 minutes.

the reason i'm able to post this question is because i'm alternating between my cable and my roommate's cable every few minutes. it's incredibly annoying and i can't function like this. but more importantly it shows that the problem is not the router or the cable -- my roommate's wired connection runs fine -- but rather a problem with my computer. for whatever reason it simply doesn't want to be connected to any wired network. i've disabled firewall and my anti-virus software and i've updated all my drivers.

i have an ASUS G60s gaming laptop, and i've had this problem before. after a few days it went away by itself. but i have a research paper due tomorrow so i don't have time for such a break. is there anything else i can do?

Check the laptop power saving modes, you may be turning off the network adapter after 5 minutes.... You may have different settings while on AC power vs on battery power....

Don't know if you are on a laptop or desktop. But to get over the hump, I would buy a

usb ethernet adapter OR swap out that ethernet card. I guess you could check to

see if something is flooding the card with packets, which would make the card

reset with the process of unplugging the cable.

check windows update for a new driver. if there is none it means: your ethernet port is screwed, which means your computer is screwed.
